x402 — Internet-Native Payments

The x402 protocol turns HTTP's unused 402 status code into a real payment rail, purpose-built for the agent era.

How it works:

  1. Agent sends an HTTP request to a paid skill endpoint
  2. Server responds with 402 Payment Required and payment instructions
  3. Agent pays via stablecoin (USDC, USDT, etc.)
  4. Agent retries the request with payment proof
  5. Server verifies payment and delivers the skill

Key properties:

  • Zero protocol fees — Only nominal blockchain network costs
  • Instant settlement — Money moves at the speed of the internet
  • No accounts needed — No registration, KYC, or personal information required
  • Fully autonomous — Agents pay without human approval per transaction

ERC-8004 — Trustless Agent Identity & Reputation

ERC-8004 is an Ethereum standard that provides agents and skill authors with on-chain identity, reputation, and validation. It went live on Ethereum mainnet in January 2026.

Three on-chain registries:

Identity Registry

Each skill author gets a unique on-chain identifier based on ERC-721. Portable, censorship-resistant, and linked to a wallet for receiving payments.

Reputation Registry

Agents submit feedback after using skills. Scores aggregate on-chain for composability and off-chain for sophisticated ranking algorithms.

Validation Registry

Third-party validators independently verify skill quality — stakers re-running tasks, zkML verifiers, trusted judges, or TEE oracles.
